Smart Condos, or Small Condos?
Despite all of today’s national news that January saw a continued decline in the housing market, this is the story that caught my eye! Of course, readers of this blog already know that in the Chelan market, January was not a bad month. They also may not be surprised that growth management is driving up the price of housing. But, did you know in Seattle that developers are offering condos as small as 298 square feet, and they are selling out? Sure, this is happening in the big city, not Chelan. However, look at how much our land costs compared to Seattle and ask yourself, is this what affordable housing may look like in the future?
Many homes in our area have closets that are more than 300 s.f., yet there are urban dwellers who are living long term in spaces this size and, according to the article, are happy.
The author makes a good analogy that one person’s Smart Car is, another person’s Small Car…

The GMA has done more to make housing unaffordable than anything else. It took the laws of supply and demand and tried to change them, can’t be done. As a developer myself in Chelan County I am subjected to regulations and time delays that only increase costs, yet no one seems to think there is a negative impact to this until a goofy editorial is written in the World. The non stop hang wringing about affordable housing without actually getting to the root cause of things is maddening. There are alternatives but no one wants to hear them.
